This recipe is for a traditional South African potjie, which is a stew made in a cast-iron pot over an open flame. It’s perfect for sharing with family and friends and can be easily customized to your liking.
Traditional South African Potjie

Ingredients:
- 1kg beef or lamb, cubed
- 2 onions, chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, crushed
- 2 carrots, sliced
- 2 sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
- 1 cup beef or chicken stock
- 1 can chopped tomatoes
- 2 tbsp oil
- 2 tbsp curry powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
- Heat the oil in the potjie over the open flame.
- Add the onions and garlic, and cook until fragrant.
- Add the beef or lamb and brown on all sides.
- Add the curry powder and stir to coat the meat.
- Add the stock and tomatoes, and bring to a simmer.

- Simmer for 1-2 hours or until the meat is tender and the vegetables are cooked through.
- Serve with rice, pap, or bread.

- Serve with rice, roti, or naan.
